The PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) is larger and stronger than the ACL and is often injured by a direct blow to the front of the knee, such as from a fall or a dashboard injury during a car accident.
Unlike ACL injuries, PCL tears may not cause a popping sound, but swelling, stiffness, and difficulty walking downhill or downstairs can indicate damage.
Treatment Options:
Mild to moderate injuries: Most heal with conservative treatment — rest, bracing, and targeted physiotherapy to strengthen surrounding muscles.
Severe injuries or multiple ligament damage: Surgery may be needed to restore full function, especially if instability remains.
Proper rehabilitation is key for a strong and stable knee post-injury.
